Civic City Cahier Series
The Civic City Cahier Series intends to provide material for a critical discussion about the role of design for a new social city. Currently design plays an increasingly important role in shaping urban spaces. A City is no longer seen to comprise only buildings, streets, squares and parks. Text and images in public space, branding campaigns, street art, guidance systems, temporary installations, processual and interactive design and cartographic representations influence our use, experience and perception of the city, as do signage, urban furnishings, vehicles, infrastructures and the appearance of public facades. The Civic City Cahier Series addresses these design practices in the light of the escalating crisis of neoliberalism. It looks for design potentials for a social city. Edited by Jesko Fezer and Matthias Görlich, published by Bedford-Press, London.

Civic City 2, Designing in Crisis
In the autumn of 2010, Design2context, the Institute for design research, leads for the second time, the Postgraduate Program Civic City. Civic City operates as a laboratory, where practitioners and theorists from the fields of design, architecture, urban design, visual communication, sociology, anthropology and futurology cooperate in researching, developing, and discussing new perspectives on the design of urban spaces. The transdisciplinary program will be accompanied by ten expert colloquia. In these three day modules, professionals offer a variety of perspectives on the theme. Inputs are communicated, processed and worked on through workshops, projects, lectures, exhibitions and salons de recherche. Civic City is open for all, interested to work on «another urban». Conference “Design for the Post-Neoliberal City”
“From being strategic places for the implementation of neoliberal policy, cities may possibly become a new political arena for experiments in democracy – and in return require a new design. But designers continue to hold back with criticism and proposals. Yet the time has come, to redefine the role of design in a social city – and to take action. “Design for the Post-Neoliberal City” will posit the basic principles and points of departure of a search for an alternative urban design practice, beyond the practices and ideology of crisis-ridden, late-capitalist urbanism. For it is precisely in the field of design, which has hitherto taken only a cautious approach to urban issues, that one finds unexplored potential for an intentional (re-)design of space.”. This conference is part of the Civic City program and will be held on March 12th & 13th at the University for the Arts in Zurich. The graphic concept introduced “Visual Statements” by four leading graphic design studios on the topic of the conference. See below the contributions by Metahaven, Zak Kyes, Manuel Raeder and Lehni-Trueb.

Workshop: Bitte lasst die Blumen leben
Documentation of a workshop conducted at the Faculty for Design, University Darmstadt. Workshop participants: Marijana Babic, Alexander Brade, Michaela Dechert, Linnea Erlich, Patrick Gasselsdorfer, Christoph Kronenberg, Rade Matic, Pawel Napiorkowski, Florian Renschke, Oliver Schendzielorz, Andreas Strack.
From the introduction to the book: “Was ist das Gute, was ist das Schlechte, was ist das Hässliche im Design? Was ist gutes, was ist schlechtes, was ist hässliches Design?

“An Atlas of Radical Cartography in Zurich”
“An Atlas of Radical Cartography” makes its premise on undermining the claim of mapping as an objective representation of the world. Instead, the project understands mapping as a tool for reconstructing our society and political sphere against the dominant pictures of the world that are often represented or made invisible by «falsographers» (Olivier Rolin). In this radical cartography converge diverse practices such as art, critical theories, architectural & graphic designs and activism, share interests in re-mapping the world collectively. “An Atlas of Radical Cartography” was initiated and convened as a publication of ten maps together with ten accompanying essays by New York-based artists Lize Mogel and Alexis Bhagat. As a traveling exhibition, it was called in and reset anew at several institutes in the United States. Now, for the exhibtion at Whitespace in Zurich, the collection of maps had been updated and extended to put a stronger focus on the changes of the world after the neoliberal crisis. Those maps take on a range of pressing social and political issues from globalization and economic inequity to diverse urban concerns, in the process creating new imaginary territories and anticipating possible actions. In close collaboration with Matthias Görlich/White Spots Black Holes.

Graphic Design for and Against Cities
The first Civic City Display in the Showcases of Corner College is centered around the question of a critical representation of urban issues. It presents graphic works by Zak Kyes and Metahaven. “Graphic Design for and Against Cities” refers to the research exhibition by the Amsterdam based design collective Metahaven “Stadtstaat. A Scenario for Merging Cities”, previously shown in Künstlerhaus Stuttgart and Casco, Utrecht, and the group exhibition “Dubai Düsseldorf” at Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, which included work by London graphic designer and publisher Zak Kyes. Around the same time in 2009, both exhibitions were concerned in different ways with imaginary merged cities as a phenomenon of globalization. The works of Metahaven and Zak Kyes deal with the potentials of visual communication in the re-presentation of such cities as well as with the possibility of graphic critiques of strategies for urban marketing and its image politics.

Cultural Spaces In India
India’s mega cities have become crystallization points for the country’s spectacular yet conflictual modernization processes that have placed India firmly on the map of economic and political world powers. A parallel process has occurred in the cultural sphere. The arts have opened up the boundaries of traditional cultural agency while confronting an ambiguous civic sphere that increasingly blurs the boundaries between public and private, local and global, physical and virtual, stable and instable.
How does this transformation reshape the spatial and institutional requirements for cultural and artistic production? Which typology of a contemporary cultural space can create a social space and audience that allows for a translocal exchange of knowledge, experiments and aesthetic experience? Who would be the authors in the construction of such an institutional space? Is it possible to build an institution while producing art? Cultural Spaces India is a research project initiated by the Goethe Institutes in India. Project-Team: Rike Frank, Nikolaus Hirsch, Grant Watson, Zak Kyes, Matthias Görlich. Refuge Project / Diwan Newspapers
The contrast between the ideals of “Open City” (main theme of the Biennale for Architecture in Rotterdam) and the realities of “refuge” forms the starting point of this research. Beyond aiming to understand this urban condition, this exhibition will propose concrete approaches to architecture that deals with it.The exhibition will be developed through the three main components: “commissions” speculating on modes of operations for architects; “research network” bringing together Universities and urban research from the region; and “diwan” — a space for theoretical reflection and debate. Diwan communicates through newspapers each one covering aspects of refuge in the cities Amman, Cairo, Istanbul, Beirut and Dubai. Curated by Philipp Misselwitz and Can Altay. Designconcept and realization by Studio Matthias Görlich.

Bas Princen: Refuge. Five Cities Portfolio.
From the publishers: The artworks brings cities together which not only share history and numerous cultural traditions but also many contemporary challenges. The pictures in this photo book are made by photographer Bas Princen. He took part in one of the research teams of the 4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR). He captured the meaning of the open city, the main theme of the IABR, in pictures. City portraits: This book brings together intimate portraits of five great cities: Istanbul, Beirut, Amman, Cairo and Dubai. Through its pages we discover quietly beautiful, yet meticulously constructed images; unexpected views of cities which take us beyond the clichés. These images constitute architectural research and visual poetry at the same time. The publication is the result of a unique collaboration between leading academics and urban researchers based in the five cities and the Dutch artist Bas Princen. It has been specially commissioned by architectural curators Philipp Misselwitz and Can Altay for the IABR 2009. Published by Sun Publishers, Amsterdam. Design by Studio Matthias Görlich. Institution Building Artists, Curators And Achitects In The Struggle For Institutional Space
“Institution Building” (edited By Nikolaus Hirsch, Philipp Misselwitz, Markus Miessen and Matthias Görlich) presents a study that conceptualizes, tests, and practically applies the spatial strategy for the European Kunsthalle. The developed approach attempts to constructively question ideas of “stability” and “instability” and—in doing so— proposes a specific strategy for the European Kunsthalle that positions it within a local, regional, national and international contemporary discourse. Nikolaus Hirsch, Philipp Misselwitz, Markus Miessen, and Matthias Görlich have developed three spatial strategies: an unstable configuration, a stable strategy as well as a model that consolidates the potentials of both variants towards a, albeit slowly, growing institution. The proposal acts as a laboratory that plans a collective structure consisting of individual components. It results in a network of possible spatial options stemming from programmatic modules and leads to numerous possible spatial configurations. This alternative institution is a showcase of a growing phenomenon problematizing the relationship between authorship and institution. As time spans of exhibitions become shorter and programs become more differentiated, architecture in itself becomes exhibition - renegotiating the default role models of artists and architects. With contributions by Shumon Basar, Andrea Phillips, and Jan Verwoert. Published by Sternberg-Press. More info here.

Spaces Of Production
“Spaces of Production” is a study that conceptualizes, tests, and practically applies the spatial strategy for the European Kunsthalle in Cologne. The investigation does not result from purely theoretical, conceptual considerations but is rather the result of the activities incorporated into the European Kunsthalle founding phase’s two-year work practice from 2005 to 2007. The spatial strategy for the European Kunsthalle is therefore the direct result of “applied research” – an iterative investigation informed by resonances between theory and practice. Research-Team: Nikolaus Hirsch, Philipp Misselwitz, Markus Miessen, Matthias Görlich. For more information, click here.

James Ensor
There is surely no artist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century whose oeuvre is as bizarre, ironic, profound, and as open to as many interpretations as that of the Belgian painter James Ensor. His paintings populated with masks, skeletons, and imaginary figures and his theatrically staged still lifes have become an unmistakable symbol for the absurdity of existence, influencing the German Expressionists just as much as the French Surrealists. Particularly when seen in terms of new trends in painting like the return to the figurative and narrative or manifestations of the grotesque and comic, Ensor’s creative work seems current once again. Approximately eighty thematically arranged masterpieces on canvas and an equal number of works on paper from various countries’ museums and private collections represent key works from all phases of his production. The exhibition is the first comprehensive retrospective of Ensor’s work to be shown in Germany since 1972. Exhibition curated by Ingrid Pfeifer, Schirn-Kunsthalle. Architecture: HirschMueller Architects, Frankfurt. Photography: Norbert Miguletz, Frankfurt.

Large scale headlines and restrained color-fields separate the chapters but also conntect the structure of the exhibitions content. A second content-level is offered to the visitor through the introduction of drawers. There more in-depth information is accessible. An audio-guide system in french and english language translates the german texts printed on the walls of the builing. Exhibitiondesign realized while working for Ade Hauser Lacour, Frankfurt (with Nicole Klein).

“Und keiner hat für uns Kaddisch gesagt …”, exhibition
This exhibtion at Jewish Museum Frankfurt is the first to cover the Deportation of Jews from Frankfurt between 1941 and 1945. With the help of information on chosen victims, the main exhibtion-space exemplarily presents the course of 8 deportations from Frankfurt to concentration camps recunstructing the dramatic fate of the victims in these camps and ghettos. The exhibtion spaces enclosing the main exhibtion space present the beginning of the discrim-ination and violence before 1937 and the reconstruction of the jewish community in Frankfurt after the end of WW2. The exhibition design had to deal with two major challenges: the mass of information and the diverse media-sources. Not only papers, photographs and biographical information had to be included, but also personal objects. A strict grid system using the entire height of the exhibtion-space allowed us to present the numerous textual information aswell as the exhibition objects in an adequat and comprehesible way. The exhibtion objects such as Video, Sound, show-cases and original documents are integrated into the grid units. exhibit-drawers, filled with personal belongings of the victims contrast the fully printed wooden surface. Realized while working for Ade Hauser Lacour, Frankfurt (with Nicole Klein). Total exhibition space: 285 sqm. Architecture by Wandel, Hoefer, Lorch+Hirsch, Saarbrücken, Photography: Norbert Miguletz, Frankfurt. This exhibition got awarded the IF Award 2005.
